開車時(shí)要“提高警覺”

當(dāng)你在交通十分擁擠的情況下開車的時(shí)候，你一定會(huì)很緊張。這時(shí)，你的眼睛就會(huì)張得大大的，注意看周圍是否有危險(xiǎn)的情況。美國(guó)人有一個(gè)常用的俗語用來形容這種情景，就是 to keep one's eyes peeled。To keep one's eyes peeled 實(shí)際上就是“提高警覺”的意思。住在華盛頓的人經(jīng)常會(huì)說：

The beltway is very dangerous to drive on, especially during the rush hour. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled when you change lanes to pass one of those big trucks they call eighteen wheelers.

在環(huán)繞華盛頓地區(qū)的這條高速公路上開車是非常危險(xiǎn)的，特別是上下班交通最忙的時(shí)候。所以，當(dāng)你要改換車道，超過那種十八個(gè)輪子大卡車的時(shí)候，你一定要十分警覺。

有的時(shí)候，那些做壞事的罪犯也會(huì)用to keep one's eyes peeled這個(gè)俗語。下面就是一個(gè)例子：

Joe, I'm going to have to drill this lock out of the door for us to get in. The drill will make some noise, so keep your eyes peeled for the cops.
