英語中的很多常用介詞、代詞、連詞、助動詞、冠詞的發音都有分weak and strong forms
在國內學英語時，我們學到的音標是這樣的：
The [beautiful] [mountain] [appeared] [transfixed] in the [distance]. (8 words)
He can [come] on [Sundays[ as long as he doesn't have to [do] any [homework] in the [evening]. (18 words)
介詞、代詞、連詞、助動詞、冠詞都屬于function words，在句中一般都不會被做重讀處理，因為他們都是跟其他有意義的content words （名詞、動詞、形容詞、副詞）連在一起使用的，我們應該做的是重讀那些content words。
1. I must go now.
2. I really must stop smoking.
1. It was raining.
2. Yes, it was .
1. Where have you been?
2. I should have done that.
3. What did you have for breakfast?
1. I am looking at you.
2. What are you looking at?
