Thanksgiving: A time of reunion
Find out about Thanksgiving in the USA by reading the following letter from an American girl to her Chinese penfriend.
Dear Mei,
In your last letter, you asked about Thanksgiving.
Well, Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the USA every year on the fourth Thursday in November.
This holiday started four hundred years ago.
In the winter in 1620, some Pilgrims left England and arrived at Plymouth, Massachusetts.
These Pilgrims were among the first English settlers in the New World.
Since they were city folk, they had no idea how to farm or hunt for food.
Fortunately, the local American Indians were very friendly.
They helped these Pilgrims and taught them how to survive.
In 1621, after the harvest, the Pilgrims set aside a day of thanks and had a big dinner with their new Indian friends.
Thanksgiving has been celebrated ever since.
