閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

The first time I saw Jim Wooten I really understood him. He was a great reporter, the best there was on television, he was reporting on the genocide(種族滅絕)in Rwanda. He had been there for several days, and there had been on heartbreaking moment when the camera had shown all of the children who were dying, already crippled by terrible diseases and starving to death now. Jim ended his pieces by saying that when he got home, the first thing he was going to do was to put his arms around his own children. I realized then that he was different, that he did not fall into any of the modern television-news traps, soulless reporting or, even worse, awful artificial television journalist sympathy. Instead, I was watching a real reporter with a gift for both words and slight differences.
Then I read his latest book, We Are all the Same, about his friendship with Xolani Nkosi, a south African boy who became the international spokesman for AIDS. In one sense it’s the story of a most unlikely friendship between Wooten and a tiny black child who was ten years old and already dying of AIDS. It is also a book about a great teacher and his student. But the teacher — the one with real wisdom and understanding about life — not the journalist. And, finally, it’s a love story about Gail Johnson, Nkosi’s white adoptive mother who does her best to save the boy, and their love for each other. In the end, reading it is more a religious experience than a literary one.
56.What’s the writer’s attitude towards Jim Wooten? ______
A.Negative B.envious C.Respectful D.Stupid
57.Why did Jim Wooten put his arms around his own children the moment he arrived home?
______
A.Because he loved his children more than anyone else.
B.Because he felt great pity for the children in Rwanda
C.Because he had a deep affection for the world.
D.Because he was a real reporter who thought and acted in the same way.
58.The underlined word “artificial” here probably means ______.
A.real B.natural C.a(chǎn)ffected D.cruel
59.The purpose of writing the passage is to _______.
A.call on readers to help those infected with AIDS.
B.introduce a reporter and one of his books
C.show how miserable the children in Africa are
D.describe the love between a black boy and his adoptive mother.

We have recently heard a great deal about the bad effects of computers on our social and economic organization. In industry, computers mean automation, and automation means unemployment. Computers in the USA have already begun to displace workers whose tasks are simple. The variety of jobs, formerly done only by humans, that the machine can perform more rapidly, accurately, and economically, increases with each new generation of computers. If we follow this trend, we will be faced with mass unemployment for all but a handful of highly trained professionals, who will then be more powerful and overworked than they are now.
What can we do about it? It is foolish to dream of changing history. We cannot pass laws forbidding the advancement of science and technology. The computing machines are here, and they will grow because engineers want to build them, and politicians want their help in the process of government. In short, they will develop and become popular because they enable us to complete tasks that could never before have been undertaken, no mater how many unskilled laborers we might have set to work. Computers will continue to increase our intelligence for just the same reason that engines continue to strengthen our muscles. The question we must ask is not whether we shall have computers or not, but rather, since we have had them, how we can make the most humane and intelligent use of them.
60.According to the passage, ___ can best indicate the author’s attitude towards the computer.
A.very worried B.little doubting C.very hopeful D.rather excited
61.The author suggests that the computer will continue to grow because _____.
A.it is foolish and impossible to control
B.no law can forbid the advancement of science.
C.it can enable us to complete ordinary tasks
D.it can be and has been put to good use.
62.If computers continue to develop, _____ will be most unlikely to be badly influenced.
A.unskilled workers B.highly trained professionals
C.ordinary technicians D.government workers
63.The main idea of the last paragraph is that ________.
A.the most humane and intelligent use can be made of computers
B.computers will continue to increase our intelligence
C.we are able to build faster and advanced computers.
D.computers will develop and become popular.

IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU
Many people think there is no need to take special care over home safety.
“I’m all right. I’m insured”
Maybe you’re fully insured. Even then you can never recover the real value you place upon possessions. But you can’t insure against the suffering of mind that we all feel if our homes are torn apart by some stranger, our windows and doors broken, our possessions ruined.
“It won’t happen to me”
Won’t it? A house is broken into every three minutes of the day. Loss of all kinds, including cars and things stolen from cars, happen every 35 seconds.
“I’ve nothing worth stealing.”
You may think not. But in fact everyone has something worth a thief’s attention. And we all have things of personal value, even if they’re worth little or nothing in hand cash.
“I’m only a tenant(房客)here”
The thief doesn’t care whether you’re a tenant or an owner. You’re just as weak either way. Have a word with the owner if you think extra safety fittings are necessary.
“They’ll get in anyway.”
Most thieves are on the lookout for easy pickings. They are soon discouraged by houses they can’t get into quickly and easily. So do pay special attention.
“This booklet will help you.”
It’s based on the practical experience of police forces throughout the country. Most of the suggestions will cost you only a few minutes’ extra time and thought. A few may cost some expense, but this is small compared with the loss and sadness you might otherwise suffer.
If you are in any doubt, ask for free advice from the Crime Prevention Office at your local police station.
64.The passage is mainly about ______.
A.how to turn to the Crime Prevention Office for help when you suffer home picking
B.how to protect your home
C.how to take special care of ourselves
D.how to hire a safe house in the country
65.We can learn from the passage that ______.
A.we all have something that a thief thinks worth stealing
B.most thieves are good at stealing things from cars
C.it’s impossible to prevent a house from being broken into
D.most thieves show interest in the owner of the house.
66.If a house is difficult to get into, ______.
A.the thief won’t give up trying
B.the owner may think extra safety fittings are necessary
C.the thief will abandon it on half way
D.the owner may think there is no need to take special care
67.We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.There is no need to take special care over home safety.
B.The skill of stealing is very advanced nowadays.
C.You can’t afford to get advice from your local police station
D.You can recover the suffering of mind if you’re fully insured

The Italian Island of Sardinia recently lost its oldest citizen. Family members say Antonio Todde died in his sleep early this month. Mr. Todde was 112 years old. He was less than three weeks away from his 113th birthday. Record-keeping experts say he was the world’s oldest man.
His long life and that of other very old Sardinians are the subjects of a scientific project called Akea. Luca Deiana of Sassari University is directing the study. He says the name Akea comes from a traditional greeting on Sardinia. It means “health and life for 100 years.” Professor Deiana and his team started to collect information for the study in 1997. they identified more than 220 Sardinians who were centenarians. His team required three docements to confirm a person’s age. They were a government birth record, a church record and a statement by a close family member.
The Akea study has produced two major findings. The first is Sardinia’s extremely high number of centenarians. The island has about 135 centenarians for every one million people. In other western countries, the average is about seventy-five centenarians for every one million people. The second major finding was an unusual rate of female to male centenarians. Sardinia has two women centenarians for every male centenarian. In central Sardinia there are equal numbers of female and male centenarians.
Studies in other parts of the world have shown, a much higher percentage of female centenarians. The Akea study collected information about the health and diet of about 140 of the centenarians. About ninety percent of those in the study also agreed to provide blood for scientific testing. The study team hopes to identify genetic material in the blood that can be linked to successful aging. Study leaders say there is no single reason why people on Sardinia live so long. They believe the answer is a combination of genetic and environmental conditions.
72.What does the passage mainly talk about? ______.
A.Two major findings of the Akea study.
B.A scientific study on centenarians.
C.Studies on the percentage of male and female centenarians.
D.Why people on Sardinia live so long.
73.In the second paragraph, “centenarians” refer to ______.
A.the world’s oldest citizens. B.people who are 100 years old
C.110-year-old people D.healthy and active old people
74.Why do Sardinians live so long according to the study?
A.Because their genetic material in the blood is linked to successful aging
B.There is still no answer.
C.Because they enjoy special genetic and environmental conditions.
D.Because the health and diet of them are special.
75.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ____.
A.Sardinia has an unusual rate of male to female centenarians.
B.There are equal numbers of female and male centenarians on Sardinia.
C.Other parts of the world have a higher rate of female centenarians than central Sardinia.
D.There are about seventy –five centenarians for every one million on Sardinia.
