Mobile phone technology has advanced at an incredible rate in the last few years. The first generation (1G) mobile phone system was developed to make and receive telephone calls anywhere within the mobile phone network., Then came the digital revolution and 2G mobile phones could also be used for sending text messages (SMS). What this meant was that mobile phone users could use SMS as a cheap means of keeping in touch. According to one website, China began using SMS in 2000 and growth has been amazing. From a little over 1 billion messages in 2000, 220 billion SMS messages were sent in 2003. Recently developed 3G technology has enabled new features to be added to mobile phones. One such feature is a tiny camera in the phone that enables that sending of photographs and video images. Another development that has been added is WAP technology that allows you to access the internet from your phone. At present, however, WAP technology is more expensive than using a computer but this is sure to change.
