You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on, say, ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing — something which had only vaguely interested you up till then. This volume on the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting, that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section. Book-sellers must be both long-suffering and indulgent.
你必須小心，不要被書店里各種各樣的書所吸引。很容易發(fā)生的事是，走進(jìn)書店去找一本比如關(guān)于古錢幣的書，結(jié)果出來時(shí)卻買了一部最新的暢銷小說，也許還有一本關(guān)于拓印的書——而你本來對(duì)其并不怎么感興趣。然而，這卷專著里的插圖偏偏又是那么精美，翻閱到的那部分論述恰恰又是那么有趣，于是你非把它買下不可。這種事兒可能是很危險(xiǎn)的咧。除了積欠下一大筆錢款之外，你還從這一陳列專柜轉(zhuǎn)悠到另一陳列專柜，浪費(fèi)了不少時(shí)間。賣書人必須有耐心能長(zhǎng)期忍受，而且還要待人寬容。
There is a story which well illustrates this. A medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in his bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was dismayed to find the book missing from its usual place and was about to leave when he noticed the owner of the shop beckoning to him. Expecting to be told off he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book, which was tucked away in a corner. "I put it there in case anyone was tempted to buy it," he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading.
這兒有段故事，完全可以證明這一點(diǎn)。有個(gè)學(xué)醫(yī)的學(xué)生需要用本教科書，但是因?yàn)闀F買不起。從圖書館他又沒法借到，他唯一能找到的，就是他常去的那家書店里的那一本了。所以每天下午他都要上書店來，一次讀上幾個(gè)章節(jié)。然而有一天，他卻失望地發(fā)現(xiàn)，那本書在他通常擺放的地方不見了。正當(dāng)他要離開時(shí)，卻注意到書店主在示意他過去。他向店主走去，心里揣測(cè)著要被人家責(zé)備一番了。使他驚奇的是，店主卻指了指那本書，原來它被藏在了一個(gè)角落里。“是我放在那兒的，我怕有人會(huì)把這本書買了去，”說完了，就讓那個(gè)喜出望外的大學(xué)生繼續(xù)去啃他的教科書了。
