Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)

一年半后,他意識到升遷的機會等于零,故而決定有所改變,即“After about a year and a half,I realized that my chances of advancement were nil,and it was time to do something about it.”。

.由文章第三段第一句“I floated the idea of attending college to my coworkers and superiors and the response was mostly negative.”

.由“Culture Shock”部分第一段最后兩句“I found, instead, that most of the culture shock happens when you leave class and go back to work. For while your coworkers and bosses are not changing, you are.”

.由“Overcoming the initial obstacles”部分第一段第三,第四句“Actually it was the other way around.I saw staying in my job as a way to avoid facing responsibilities, and college as a more real world-and an island of sanity in my life.”

.由“Overcoming the initial obstacles”第三段第一句“Probably the biggest obstacle I faced, since I was plagued by doubts about my own intelligence and abilities, was just getting started.”

.由“College life for adults”部分第四段第三句“We tended to be more focused on getting an education, had a lot to contribute to the class discussion because of our experience in the world and were less likely to argue over a grade.”

.在“The Big Time”部分第一段中作者指出“Against the odds,I had achieved something...had learned to let all the negativity go in one ear and out the other.”,故本題正確答案為C項。

.由“College life for adults”部分最后一段第三句“You may even find that the company of other scholars will help you expand your intellectual horizons”可見,此題正確答案為“expand his intellectual horizons”。

.由“The Big Time”部分的最后一段“A college degree opens doors. It might not be possible to see the doors when you are just starting out,but they are there if you have the patience and drive to pursue your dreams.”

由第一段的第二、三兩句“I remember the fun I had in college, the people I met,the professors who taught me and the experiences that changed my life. And I'm glad I made the sacrifices.” 可見本題答案可以是“was glad he had made the sacrifices”。由“The Big Time”部分第三段最后一句“It hasn't always been easy and it hasn't always been that much fun,but I've never regretted reinventing my life.” 故本題答案也可以是“had never regretted reinventing his life”。
