Topic 8. Should We Learn English from Primary School?
Nowadays, many primary schools give English courses from the first grade. It is commonly believed that the earlier children begin to study a foreign language, the better they can master it, so the English class in primary schools is necessary. What's more, studies show that schoolchildren are more likely to cultivate an interest and love in English learning rather than to study it as a boring task.

But others take a negative attitude. They don't think language study in early age could foster the top language master. On the contrary, if children begin to study English too early, their study of Chinese would be interfered, and the result is that both their mother tongue and English would be poor. It is true that many children in the first grade always confuse English letters with the Pinyin.

Consequently, I have to agree that English class in primary school is good for children in language learning, but we should not ignore its weak points. So English class in primary schools is good and the class beginning from the fourth grade would be better.

現(xiàn)如今，很多小學(xué)從一年級起就開設(shè)了英語課。因為人們普遍認(rèn)為孩子學(xué)習(xí)外語時年紀(jì)越小，就會學(xué)得越好，所以小學(xué)的英語課是十分必要的。此外，有研究表明小學(xué)生更容易培養(yǎng)出對英語學(xué)習(xí)的興趣和喜愛，而不會把英語學(xué)習(xí)當(dāng)成枯燥的任務(wù)。

但也有人持反對的觀點。他們認(rèn)為從小開始學(xué)語言并不見得可以培養(yǎng)出語言大師。正相反，孩子們過早學(xué)習(xí)英語會嚴(yán)重影響到他們的中文學(xué)習(xí)，其結(jié)果會是他們的母語和英語掌握得都不好。的確，不少小學(xué)一年級的孩子都經(jīng)常分不清英語字母和漢語拼音。

因此，我必須承認(rèn)小學(xué)開設(shè)的英語課程對于孩子的外語學(xué)習(xí)是有益的，但我們也不能忽視它的缺點。所以說，小學(xué)開設(shè)英語課程是沒有錯的，如果能從四年級開始學(xué)習(xí)的話會更好。
