Boris Johnson's Conservative Party has officially won the UK's general election with a sweeping majority. The result should allow Johnson to fulfill his plan to take the UK. out of the European union next month. Meanwhile, it's been a disastrous night for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who despite retaining his seat, has bowed to internal party pressure announcing he will step down as leader.
Firefighters are continuing to battle a bushfire north of Perth, as they prepare for worsening conditions this afternoon. An emergency warning remains in place in Two Rocks, Breakwater and Sea Tree estates as well as northern parts of Yanchep in the city of Wanneroo. People in the area are urged to leave now if the way is clear, as there is a threat to lives and homes.
Elite New Zealand military teams have braved corrosive gases and the risk of another eruption, to recover six bodies from White Island. Aircraft and divers are still searching for another two bodies, with police saying they now believe at least one is in the sea near the island.
And Australia and New Zealand have joined forces in the race to host the next FIFA women's world cup, in 2023. Football Federation Australia had initially planned on submitting its own bid, while New Zealand put its name forward back in March. If successful, it would be the first time two countries have hosted a women's world cup.
