Former Olympian Zali Steggall has confirmed she will stand against former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in his Sydney seat of Warringah. Ms Steggall says she'll run as an independent in the next federal election. The four time winter Olympian skier is a barrister and manly resident in Sydney's north.
Five emergency warnings have been reinstated for the south of Tasmania and another in the central region as several blazes threaten communities. Authorities say they expect some rainfall next week but said conditions remain challenging with continued hot weather predicted for the state.
Nearly 300 people are missing, many feared dead, after a dam collapse at a mine in south-eastern Brazil. Emergency services say they've recovered nine bodies from the massive mud field left by the disaster. The governor says there's little chance of finding survivors.
