Ransomware is one of the worst threats on the Internet. And with the criminals behind it earning millions of dollars each month, there’s no sign that the situation will improve anytime soon. According to a study put together by Google and Chainalysis, criminals are earning somewhere in excess of $2.5 million.

The research team sifted through Google’s cache of ransomware samples. They then turned to Blockchain to identify transactions from ransomware victims. One study finding was that 94% of all payouts were processed by the Russian Bitcoin exchange BTC-E.
