Lesson 36 The Useful Sheep
第36課 渾身是寶的綿羊
The sheep is not very much like the cow, is it? It is much smaller, and it has quite a different kind of coat.But still the sheep and the cow are of the same family—the large family of animals that "chew the cud. " Do you remember what that means?
綿羊跟牛長得不太像，對吧？羊的個頭比牛小多了，毛皮也很不一樣。但是牛和羊還是一個家族的，都是“反芻動物”。還記得這是什么意思嗎？
As the sheep always lives in the open air, it needs a warm coat all over its body. This is called a fleece, and the long curly hair of the fleece is called wool.
綿羊一直生活在露天的地方，所以需要溫暖的毛皮來遮蓋身體。這一層毛皮，在剪下來的時候是聚成一塊兒的，這種塊兒上面長長的卷毛，英語里叫做wool。
When the cold winter is over and the spring has come, the sheep's fleece is cut off with a pair of shears. Thewool of the fleece is used to make our clothing.
寒冷的冬天結束，春天來臨的時候，人們就用剪子把羊毛塊兒剪下來，用羊毛塊兒上的羊毛來做衣服。
The sheep has four toes on each foot. The two at the back of the foot are very small, and do not touch the ground. The two at the front have each a hard, horny covering or nail, and so we call the sheep's foot a hoof. The hoof is split or cloven between the two toes, just like the hoof of the cow.
綿羊的每只腳上都有四個腳趾。腳后面的兩個腳趾非常小，不著地。兩個前面的腳趾，每個都有一個堅硬的角質層覆蓋著，相當于人的指甲，所以我們把羊的腳叫做“蹄子”。兩個腳趾的蹄子是“分開”的，也可以說是“分趾”，跟牛蹄子一樣。
The teeth of the sheep are also like those of the cow. The sheep could not live upon flesh; its teeth are suited only for eating plant-food.
綿羊的牙齒，跟牛的牙齒也很像。綿羊是不能靠吃肉活著的，它的牙齒只適合吃植物。
