Apple’s chief executive announced a $1 billion investment in Didi Chuxing, a ride-hailing service that has cornered 87% of the market in China. Tim Cook said Apple’s stake should teach it more about “certain segments of the China market”. Apple wants to shore up flagging sales there and also, it seems, to enter the car business elsewhere.
