James Connolly was one of these successful dropouts. James Connolly was an American athlete and author. In 1896 when first modem Olympic Games was held in Athens, he became the first modem Olympic champion.

In his childhood, Connolly often joined other boys in the streets and vacant lots to run, jump, and play ball. His predisposition to sport, and his impact on the community, soon became apparent. He was instrumental in forming a football team in the neighborhood and was elected Captain of the Cycling Club and aggressively sought to promote the sport on behalf of the Savannah Wheelmen.

Connolly was accepted to study the classics at Harvard University in 1895. In the next year，the first modem Olympic Games was going to be held in Athens. Connolly’s request for leave was denied by Harvard College. Irritated, Connolly resigned and went to participate the Games. As the final of the triple jump, in which Connolly won the first place, was the first final on the opening up, Connolly became the first Olympic champion since 385 AD. Despite the championship, Connolly only earned a silver medal because gold medals did not yet exist.

He went on to take second place in the high jump and third place in the long jump. Back home in Boston, Connolly was welcomed enthusiastically, although Harvard had reftised his request for a leave of absence. He returned to the Paris Olympics in 1900 and took second in the triple jump.
