Bad News and Good News

An old man visits his doctor and after an examination the doctor tells him, “I have good news and bad news. What would you like to hear first?”

Patient: “Well, give me the bad news first.”

Doctor: “You have cancer. I estimate that you have about two years left.”

Patient: “Oh no! That’s awful! In two years my life will be over! What kind of good news could you probably tell me, after this? ”

Doctor: “You also have senile dementia. In about three months you are going to forget everything I told you.”

好消息和壞消息

一個老人去拜訪他的醫生。全面檢查后醫生告訴他：“好消息和壞消息，你想先聽哪個？”
病人：“那先告訴我壞消息吧。”

醫生：“你得了癌癥，我估計你只能再活兩年了。”

病人：“噢，不！太可怕了！兩年內我的生命就要結束了！都這樣了你還能有什么好消息？”

醫生：“同時你還患有老年癡呆癥。三個月內你就會忘了我告訴你的每一件事。”

【詞匯講解】

1. examination。文中是“身體檢查”的意思。也有“考試”“審問”的意思。The accused underwent examination by the Crown prosecutor.被告人受到檢察官的審訊。

2. cancer是“癌癥”的意思。而首字母大寫的Cancer則指的是“北回歸線”或者“巨蟹座”。

3. estimate，估計，評價。 Peace and honor could not be estimated in dollars. 和平和榮譽不能用錢來計算。

4. awful，可怕的。英語中含有“可怕”之義的一些詞匯有： terrific：多指外表、形狀或力量等的可怕；frightful：指使人陷入短暫的驚恐或產生毛骨悚然的感覺；horrible：指因駭人聽聞的丑惡而令人毛骨悚然，著重厭惡的成分多于害怕。
