Angola PM assures security of African Cup players

Angola's Prime Minister is assuring the countries taking part in the African Cup of Nations that their soccer players will be protected.

However, the pledge is not stopping Togo from bringing its team home following the rebel ambush on its bus Friday. The violence killed three people.

Togo's soccer team withdrew from the African Cup of Nations on Sunday.

Two days earlier, gunmen from the Front of the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda opened fire on the team bus. Assistant coach Abalo Amelete and press officer Stanislas Ocloo were killed, along with the Angolan driver of the vehicle.

Togo's Prime Minister Gilbert Houngbo called the team home on Sunday, despite an assurance from his Angolan counterpart Antonio Paulo Kassoma that his country will beef up security for all teams and at all venues.

Antonia Paulo Kassoma, Angola's Prime Minister, said, "This great party of the African youth in the year of the most important sporting event for Africa, with the World Cup in South Africa. And we also say to the Togolese delegation and to all the other delegations that their safety is guaranteed."

African leaders arrived in the Angolan capital of Luanda on Sunday to watch the tournament. Namibian President Sam Nujoma condemned the attack.

Sam Nujoma, President of Namibia, said, "I would like to condemn the terrorist activity that came to the point of attacking the Togolese players. We condemn that kind of terrorist."

Hours after the withdrawal of the Togolese team, the African Cup of Nations began in Luanda, with the Angolan hosts playing Mali in the opening match.

A moment of silence was observed at the start of the game for the three people killed in the attack.
