GREG：

And would you mind bringing your ladder? I need two ladders,so would you bring yours please?
GREG：
I'm afraid I can't,Ian.
IAN：
Oh?
GREG：
No.The ladder's broken,I'm afraid.
IAN：
Oh...well...I'll use a chair.
GREG：
O.K.I'll see you about two o'clock.
IAN：
Thanks, Greg. See you.

請求與答復（請參看第9講）
1、請某人做某事
Would/Could you help me?
Would you mind helping me?
肯定答復 否定答復
Sure? I'm afraid I can't.
O.K. I'm sorry, I can't.
All right Sorry, I can't.
Certainly.
注意：
Sure,O.K.和All right這三種說法比較隨便，比較正式。
2、請某人不做某事
Would you mind not doing that?
Please don't do that.
肯定答復（如果有人要求我們不做某事，我們通常總是同意的。）
O.K>
All right.
Sure.
Certainly.
3、請求允許做某事
a)Can I come in?
Could I use your phone?
May I sit here?
表示允許
Sure.
Of course.
Certainly.
b)Do you mind if I smoke?
表示允許
Of course not.
在回答(a)和(b)的問題時，如果表示不允許，可以說：I'd rather you didn't.
注意：
Could I... Can I..把握更小一些。
Do you mind if ..這種說法比較客氣。
請求別人允許做某事，通常是要很客氣的。如果要做的事，比如吸煙，可能使人感到不快，問的時候尤其要客氣。
如果你覺得你要問的問題不大好問，或可能使人感到尷尬，就可以先說 Do you mind if I ask a question?
I'd rather you didn't 這個說法可能顯得有點怪，不過你大概記得第4講里說過I'd rather =I'd prefer.至于 didn't ,它不表示過去的動作，這里用的是虛擬語氣。
CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES
a)Look! 意思相當于listen to what I have to say,或 What I mean is...
b)I see意思是“我明白了”，可在會話中用作答語。
