Run ultra!
Making its final journey, the Routemaster bus arrives on London's Oxford Street to pick up its last passengers, and in keeping with tradition, it was late. Bus enthusiasts've queued for hours to take a trip down Memory Lane.
Those are the buses of my childhood, and even then it was, you know, was 20 years old.
It's just friendly, the conductor, fares please.
I couldn’t help but say come here and mark the end of such a unique bus which everybody thinks of when you mention a London bus.
You could see from the crowds here quite how popular the Routemaster bus is. Ten thousand people campaigned to save it, they failed. But many of them've come here today to say goodbye.
people, people are coming!
The Routemaster bus with its "hop-on, hop-off" platform made its first appearance on London streets in the 1950s. It became a London icon as famous as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace and at one stage there were almost 3000 in service. But they've been phased out to make way for modern, more accessible models. And not everyone is sad to see them go.
I’m very pleased to see the end of the Routemaster because I can’t get onto it. And I don’t want a bus that is inaccessible to me who's in a wheel chair.
Two tourist or heritage routes mean the bus won't be disappearing altogether. But on its normal service, the Routemaster has reached the end of the road, last stop – retirement. Sarah Hughes, Sky News.
本期生詞:
fare:A transportation charge, as for a bus
