The United Nations Population Fund has taken India to task over its ratio of females to males.
In a report marking World Population Day, the Fund's Michael Vlassof said that India's commitment to tackling issues such as female foeticide and infanticide, which helped to give India one of the worst female-male ratios, seemed to be quite low.
The sex ratio in India, according to a recent survey, is 960 females to 1,000 males, and the Fund says it sees this imbalance as being due to the lower status of women in Indian society, to a preference for sons and the practices of female foeticide and infanticide.
